I've been here years ago when I lived in Cruces, and wanted to treat my current beau to this place. Sunday reservations are at am, and another time about 1 pm. Be aware, it's called a champgne brunch, but they can't serve alcohol until noon. We sat in the courtyard with the plants and fountain.
It's such a beautiful atmosphere, many rooms, some for larger parties, and some big with many tables in it. Many antiques and much opulence. Excellent service. Some of the items in the cooking trays aren't named, so you have to open them up to see what's inside.
I recommend the stawberries dipped in the chocolate fountain, the eggs benedict, the seafood salad, the salmon, and all the desserts. The fruit wasn't good when I was there. My favorite room is the bar, with the big paintings of naked women! Our biggest complaint is they didn't have scrambled eggs ready to eat - it has to be ordered, after standing in line for a while. Didn't see any toast, The biscuit and gravy was horrible. All the desserts looked yummy.
Tough to find parking, and their map to get there isn't useful. And my GPS couldn't find it for some reason. Best to take Avenuida de Messila to get to the plaza. The restaurant is kiddy-corner from the church via the plaza. Vendors sell arts and crafts in the plaza. We had free parking behind the church in the public parking lot.
I'd still go again, and my man may try it for their aged steaks off the menu.
My favorite off the menu is the grilled salmon. OH MY! The food was just overpriced and of poor quality. The starter was cerviche. This is meant to be a sharp, tangy combination of fish, onion, peppers and lime. I was given a nasty, cold, tasteless mixture of minute prawns, lettuce, and --possibly - onion. It was rather hard to tell. My main course - tourneros -- appeared to be a slurry of overcooked, elderly, tough beef in a salty, brown fluid, wrapped in an unheated tortilla. This was served with a grey, powered yet surprisingly undercooked baked potato.
My advice is simply to avoid this venue. I cannot say enough to convey how awful this restaurant is. It is just awful. It is a good theing the place is beautiful.
It's beauty makes a nice backdrop to an otherwise dreary, dirty, dismal dining experience. I do not know what has happened here, perhaps this time I just chose the wrong day to dine here.
I choose to dine here a few times a year with special friends, and always make a reservation in advance requesting specific seating. We arrived on time and were escorted into the dining room and were not given the table I was told would be available. Explaining this to the hostess she told me someone had walked in and reserved the table I had wanted, so much for the reservation theory.
As usual the wait staff was quite friendly, drink orders were taken and promptly filled. Our appetizers were their fried stuffed wantons, and salmon on toast points. The wantons were as always, very tasty. The salmon however was dry and looked as if it had been around for a while. The dinners were both just warm when served. Both were accompanied by potatoes which would not even melt butter. The chicken was quite sparse, the steak however was as good as usual. There were also charges on the bill for items not ordered. I would like to think that I just chose an evening to dine where they were just having an off night, and the Double Eagle will remain on my short list of nice places to dine in this town.
Charming smiling service, excellent wine list, award winning margaritas, their own beef ageing room for steaks all in a historic building - not to mention haunted by two ghosts!!
